 SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director, Wellness, the incumbent will prioritize working with racialized students within our community. The incumbent will support immediate triage of student needs, provide direct therapeutic support to students, outreach programming, and professional training to the Huron community to increase mental health literacy. The incumbent will also provide clinical training to practice students as needed, and consultations with faculty and staff regarding student mental health services. 

Specifically, the Wellness Counsellor will:

  • Provide triage assessments and expertise in delivering solution-focused brief therapy alongside other evidenced-based therapies and interventions. 
  • Assess and refer students to appropriate support services at Huron and in the greater community, as required. 
  • Advocate for students’ needs and effectively collaborate within the Huron Campus and with community partners. 
  • Demonstrate a detailed understanding of mental health resources in the greater community. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the social determinants of health and the social consequences and risk factors associated with mental health challenges (e.g., substance abuse, addiction, suicide, self-harm, stigma). 
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the unique social, developmental, and psychological concerns experienced by post-secondary students. 
  • Assess suicide risk and develop appropriate dispositions and safety plans. 
  • Demonstrate commitment to student-centred practices anchored in social justice with a focus on equity for students belonging to historically marginalized and underrepresented groups. 
  • Strong commitment to self-reflection and cultural awareness
  • Proficient in program development, group facilitation and learning principles.
  • Provide training and clinical supervision for graduate students in social work, including case-focused supervision, presentation of training materials, and general mentorship concerning the challenges and opportunities associated with university-based mental health care. 
  • Assist with the management and oversight of records within the electronic database and ensure that records and data are maintained in accordance with Huron’s policies and practices. 
  • Manage effective, efficient, and detailed case records to support file management systems, including appropriate documentation of all student activities, communications, and reports, and manage those files in accordance with professional and legislative regulations.  

SALARY:

  • The salary band for this position ranges from $67,615 - $82,333 annually. Salary band placement is based on experience. 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A police record check completed from a Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC), inclusive of vulnerable sector screening, will be required of the successful candidate prior to commencing employment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in social work, counselling, or psychology from an accredited institution;
  • Member in good standing with Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO);
  • Minimum of two (2) years of previous relevant experience; 
  • Demonstrated experience in understanding the impacts of racial trauma;
  • Lived experience of racialization;
  • Knowledge of systemic barriers faced by marginalized communities;
  • A strong understanding and appreciation of the mission of a liberal arts university such as Huron;
  • Excellent time management skills and a demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills;
  • Well-honed and developed interpersonal skills to represent Huron professionally;
  • Superior listening skills and the ability to interpret the concerns and interests of students;
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve effectively and use good judgement in all decisions.
