Description
Temporary Part-time (for approximately 6 months) (3 Positions)
Prepares and portions meals for residents in two dining rooms; plates meals from hot food wells and washes dishes in resident kitchenettes; follows therapeutic diet orders for residents in two home care areas. Portions food and juice servings. Cooks and serves breakfast items. Provides service to residents who may have missed regular meal times. Finishes choice sandwich, entree, vegetable, and salad preparations using ingredients supplied from production kitchen. Reheats food items to optimum temperature, as required. Bakes muffins and cookies for use at meal or snack times. Sets up hot food wells for each kitchenette dining room meal service and serves meals. Uses a thermometer to check and record food temperatures prior to each meal. Disposes of food not within safe food serving temperature range as indicated on temperature chart. Follows therapeutic diet orders in accordance with physician and/or Dietitians' orders. Labels, stores, and utilizes leftover food. Disposes of all unusable food. Verbally communicates observations regarding residents' eating habits and preferences to Dietitian or nursing staff, logs observations in communication book. Loads, runs, and unloads dishwasher following each meal service and activity room baking function. Cleans all kitchenette equipment and storage areas daily. Prolonged standing, moving about, manual dexterity, and quickness are required. Stoops and bends to lift racks of dishes weighing up to 10 kgs. Reaches overhead to retrieve supplies from shelves in refrigerators or storage rooms. Work is performed from a kitchen in a Long Term Care facility, subject to constant interruptions and to noise from kitchen equipment. Incumbent is exposed to heat from dishwashers, steam tables, and grill, and to cold from refrigerators and freezers. Incumbent has contact with elderly residents who may be confused, difficult, or mentally and/or physically frail. Works shifts, weekend hours, and statutory holidays, as scheduled.
Knowledge of reading, writing, arithmetic, and food preparation skills, normally acquired through the attainment of a grade 12 education, Food Safety Training, plus a Food Service Worker Certificate or enrollment in a Food Service Worker Certification program, and one year of food service experience in a long term care facility. Communication and human relations skills in order to respond pleasantly and professionally to demands; to communicate effectively with staff, residents, and families; to interact appropriately with and have a basic understanding of the geriatric population; and to participate as an effective team member. Ability to work independently. Ability to follow written and oral instructions in English. Ability to make accurate mental calculations for portion sizes and number of dishes required. Ability to read menus and menu modifications, temperature charts, policy and procedure manuals, and work assignment sheets. Ability to write audit forms, requisitions, temperature survey sheets, and notes regarding residents' eating habits. Ability to read recipes in order to follow proper cooking procedures. Must provide an acceptable Police Records Check in order to ensure suitability for working with vulnerable populations. Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
WAGE/SALARY: $18.34 – $19.45 per hour
