Description

The Canadian Cryospheric Information Network (http://www.ccin.ca), located at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, is currently seeking a Database Developer. The CCIN, Canada's primary source for data and information on snow, ice, and cold regions, manages the Polar Data Catalogue (http://www.polardata.ca), a collection of metadata and data generated by Arctic and Antarctic researchers. We are enhancing the data storage and interoperability capabilities of the PDC in support of a new project with the Government of Canada's Program for the International Polar Year (IPY - http://www.api-ipy.gc.ca/).

DUTIES
. Create all necessary Oracle database applications required to support collection, storage, searching, and access to the new IPY data holdings
. Modify the database, as necessary, to facilitate interoperability and mirroring of the IPY data archive with external IPY Data Assembly Centres across Canada
. Manage database submissions and requests for the IPY data archive
. Update the database request management and tracking system
. Provide format conversion of archived data to support user requests
. Ensure the long-term security of the IPY database within the CCIN/PDC archive

Additional duties include data modelling as well as working with other CCIN/PDC team members to manage Oracle database operations, ensure database security and access, resolve application infrastructure issues, make recommendations for the ongoing stability of the IT environment, support integrated web-based applications, and write and maintain documentation.

QUALIFICATIONS
. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
. 2 years experience in Oracle database development
. Knowledge of environmental data as well as the ability to manage it in the spatial domain
. UNIX/Linux (Red Hat Enterprise) and Windows Server system administration, web administration
. Ability to adapt quickly to new situations/environments as well as analyze and solve problems promptly
. Ability to successfully communicate, organize and present materials clearly, and manage time efficiently

SKILLS
Database:
Oracle 10g/11g, Oracle RMAN, Oracle XML Database, Oracle Tuning, Relational Database Design and Management
Programming:
Required: PL/SQL, SQL, XML, XSLT, HTML, Java Script
Beneficial: Java, PHP/Drupal, JSP, Servlets
Tools:
Oracle Enterprise Manager, SQL Developer, and SQL Developer Data Modeler

This is a full time, grant-funded position with benefits located in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The position is available immediately and continues through at least March 2012.
